Soleiman

Soleiman is a common Middle Eastern name and he is also an ordinary person in the Old City of Betlehem (Palestine). He was born in 1940 and soon he dropped out of school  because of his stutter. At 8 years old, he started to work with his father in the Salesian Bakery. From that time on, he has never left this place.

Soleiman, like all others bakers, is living predominatly in the night, but, unlike most of his collegues,
Soleiman has learned to work under military occupation. In April 2002, during the Second Intifada, all of Betlehem was under  42 hard days of curfew, maintained by the IDF (Israeli Defence Force). Soleiman spent six weeks in the Backery, giving
free bread to all the families in the neighbourhood through windows, balconys and over rooftops

Today, Soleiman
is regarded an istitution by all the citizens of the Old City of Betlehem.
